My Eyes on the World - 5

Edit: ***The partner is now an ex... thankfully. I suppose the bubble was bound to burst sooner or later. The person I knew, or thought I knew, might as well be dead now. I would have never imagined this person would cause my mother and family this much grief.***

While this is not an actual self portrait (because it is my mother's partner), I consider this to be a symbolic self portrait. It's her arm and she's wearing a bracelet, since the image is hard to see and understand.

Because for this project, the series was designed to focus on people's thirst for the material and lack of appreciation of relationships. So I had my mother's partner pick something of value to her, or something considered a social "material" norm for the setting. I thus destroyed the "reality" of the image by altering it with a lighter.


This picture though is has a LOT of conflicting feelings for me. This woman has done me a lot of good in helping me emotionally as I have grown for the last 12 or so years. At the same time, her mental instability has lead to such heated arguments that there are times I wish horrible things upon her.

While I do consider her to be family and more important to me than the material, there are some relationships that are better kept at a distance. This is what I want the picture to represent, if it makes any sense.
